USING MEL SCRIPTS

You can install your Learning Animation Scripts on a Maya Shelf so that they can be selected easily, or you can just run them when you need them.

Running your MEL Scripts

Make sure your script/s are extracted and placed in the Maya Scripts directory, which at the time of writing is in:- C:\Documents and Settings\your-login\My Documents\maya\2011\scripts\
You may notice that there are quite a few script directories under the Maya file structure, but the one that is directly under the Maya version folder (Examples:- 2011/scripts     2008/scripts     7.0/scripts) usually works.
It is important to use the right folder so that when you do want to install your scripts on a Maya shelf, Maya knows where they are at application start-up.
Run Maya and select the Script Editor window by clicking the box in the lower right hand corner of the Maya window.
From the Script Editor menu bar select File / Source Script and from the browser window navigate to the scripts directory, then select the Mel script you want to run, the pop up window for the desired script should then appear and be ready to use.

Installing MEL Scripts on a Shelf

To install a Script to a shelf, select a shelf that is convenient for you and with sufficient space.

Source the script following the instructions above.
From the Script Editor menu bar select File/Load Script and select the MEL script you want to load from the browser window.   Scroll down the lower MEL window of the Script Editor until you come to the end of the freshly loaded script and find the single line of code at the very end.
Here are three examples of those lines depending which script you are installing:-
rename_v05;
roughen_v04;
spread_v04;

Highlight the line of code using the left mouse button.   While the line is highlighted press the “enter” on the key pad part of your keyboard.   Do NOT use “return” otherwise the line will disappear and you will have to retype it or reload the script.   This should run the Script and the popup window should appear.
Close this window and while the line of code is still highlighted, hover over the line with your mouse.   Middle mouse drag the line of code to the desired shelf.   The MEL icon should appear on the shelf, which you can now select to run the script.
Every time Maya is started up, from now on, the MEL script should be selectable from the shelf.
